Federal Government’s Bruce Highway Upgrade

23 January 2025

Tyre Stewardship Australia (TSA) welcomes the Federal Government’s announcement of a transformative upgrade to the Bruce Highway, spanning from Brisbane to Cairns. This critical infrastructure project is set to enhance road safety, strengthen connections between regional communities, and create significant opportunities for the use of end-of-life-tyres (EOLT) in road construction.

Key Benefits of Using Recycled Tyres in Roads:

  • Sustainability: Each kilometre of the upgraded highway has the potential to repurpose up to 2,400 used tyres, contributing to national resource recovery goals.
  • Durability: Roads incorporating crumb rubber are more resistant to weather damage, reducing maintenance costs over time.
  • Safety: Crumb rubber roads are less prone to cracking and potholes, enhancing safety for motorists.

Boosting Queensland’s Local Economy and Innovation

The upgrade also represents a significant opportunity for Queensland-based tyre recycling businesses. With 10 TSA Accredited businesses already operating in the state, this project could drive innovation, create jobs, and bolster regional economies through the use of locally produced tyre-derived materials.

TSA calls on policymakers to champion the use of recycled tyres in road construction, helping Queensland lead the way in sustainable infrastructure and circular economy initiatives.
